The prefecture — 徳島県
Tokushima sits on the northeast corner of Shikoku — between the Yoshino River to the north, the Anan coastline to the south, and the Tsurugi massif rising to nearly 2,000 metres at its centre. Most visiting cyclists pass through on pilgrimage. Almost none stop to ride.
That's changing. The prefecture has a national cycle route designation along the Yoshino River, the longest forest road in Japan running through the Tsurugi mountains, a zero-waste village used as a cycling basecamp, and a coastal riding scene that rivals anything in Western Japan — all with a fraction of the traffic and tourist infrastructure of Kyoto or Hiroshima.
